"Blogshares" -- here after referred to as "BS" by me  -- has been a wildfire that has been sweeping through the Bravejournals lately.  I have noticed this website about a couple of months ago on the Bravejournal Forum and I was tempted to sign myself up as a Player.

Here is the Discussion Topic: Blogshares???

BS is a fantasy game that Players can "accumulate wealth" by investing in blogs around the world.  Generally speaking, as the blogs become more popular (i.e. visited by many visitors on a daily basis), the blog share prices rise and if you are an investor in this blog, your wealth increases as well.  And vice versa.

After sleeping on the dilemma of signing up or not, I have decided not to for the following reasons:

1. It's a waste of time and resources on my part.  Time must be devoted to research on which blog to invest in and by how much.  I could be doing other things instead of slaving away my hours.  Think of the opportunity costs.
2. I would never rank as one of the most wealthiest by BS's standards, so why start?
3. Even by the slim chance that I earn a huge amount of return.  So what?  I am not any richer by any means in real life.
4. BS does not educate us on the real stocks/bonds.  Perhaps, it's a good thing because it does not directly promote the concept of gambling.  Yet, by naming the game "A Blog Shares Market", it inevitably tempts many to actually try their hands in the real Stocks/Bonds Market.  In this case, the education provided by BS is not enough to inform us on the risks and concepts of the Trading Market.
5. BS has several InvestorBots installed; their function is to invest in blogs and bid up the blog stock prices.  Hence, in addition to competing with other Players, I must beat these Bots to obtain the stocks I want.
6. Most importantly, Bravenet (Jerret or Steve... ~I can't remember whom it was at the moment.) has stated that BS is not affiliated with Bravenet.  That is, Bravenet has never given out our links to BS.  In other words, BS has been obtaining our Statistics records and making them available to anyone in the world without the permission of anyone.  This, to me, means that BS is invading my privacies.  Considering this, should I really sign up to encourage their behaviours?
7. Seeing how BS itself receives our links using an unknown method, I would not be surprised if they in turn relay our email addresses to other websites as a means of advertising, or simply stated: spam us.

My sole purpose of siging up was to earn enough money to buy back my blog and withhold it from anyone else in the market.  But upon reaching the conclusion of point #6, I decided that I wanted nothing to do with BS.  I don't enjoy the idea that they are recording my Statistics, and I despise even more the idea of someone is "gaining profits" at my blog's expense.

In fact, I was actually thinking of removing my link from BS, but thought better of it.  I was afraid that by requesting removal, I would actually be admitting that I have seen their site and that they might start showering me with spams and emails.

If you are a registered Player, I apologize for any offense.  If you hold an opposing opinion about BS, I'd like very much to hear of it.

I signed up for it when I saw that other people had links on their sites, but after seeing that it envolved effort, couldn't be stuffed playing along. I too was thinking about removing the links from my site and asking them to remove them from theirs. But I've just changed my url anyway, so that kinda solves that, lol.

I mean, if I want to find out my website's Stats, I need to roam the 'net to find a counter to track that one particular website. Yet, these people at BS can track some hundreds, if not thousands of blogs... Very interesting and freaky at the same time... yes...
