William Hung.
Today, in a restaurant, this topic was brought up for a moment in the conversation.
Why do so many people like him? The guy is terrible! He can't sing; he can't dance; his fashion sense is non-existent; his look is enough to break a mirror. But instead of having a streak of bad luck, he manages to make himself more popular than the real American Idol that season. I can't even remember who won in that show. Was it Ruben?
Despite William's dismal performance, he has earned himself literally millions of fans. This can almost be traced to William's one quote (with a strong Hong Kong accent), "I tried my best, and I have no regrets." Paula said that, "it's the best attitude yet." In my opinion, Simon was uncharacteristically kind on him. All he said was, "You can't sing; you can't dance, what else do you want me to say?" Come on! Here is the world's worst singer ever seen, and this is all you have to say? I feel terrible for the other contestants he has insulted in the past. Ryan narrates and tells William to "bang up somewhere else."
But William didn't. He struck gold right there in Hollywood. Fans are now cheering him on and commending his attitude towards his acceptance of his shot-down. However, the truth is that many people had good attitudes, too. Some of the contestants who went to the audition asked Simon nicely what they needed to improve on, and how they could do it. Why didn't these people earn the respect of the audience?
If there were a pot, I would put my money on his "unique appearance". Let's be honest, the guy isn't the handsomest person you have ever seen. With his buck tooth, his accent, his straight haircut, his unique sense of style, surely he would attract attention! It is not about his attitude! It's his LOOK!! I am disgusted by the fact that some fans actually say he is "cute"!!! PLEASE! Did the population of men suddenly reached zero?
He is terrible. His dance move, to be honest, I don't really mind, because I can choose to not look at the TV whenever he is on. But, his singing, that is a totally different issue. He sings WAY off-key. He is probably the worst singer I have EVER heard. When a family member watches TV, and he suddenly stars in a commercial, I have to run like heck to get out of the living room. I am serious. IT IS TORTURE TO THE EARS! I cannot believe that he actually has an album out, and the darned thing is SOLD OUT!!! What is wrong with people, these days?? Has his singing totally and utterly destroyed all viewers' brain cells?! How can anybody buy something whose sole function is to torture your hearing! Are the 5 senses one too many for you, that you need to cripple one?
Stop saying that you support William Hung because he has "a good attitude". HE DOESN'T. Anyone can say anything. But do they have to mean it? NO!!! If you have seen his interview during the American Idol, you will see that he actually considers himself to be a good singer. He said in the interview that he wishes to be in the Music industry. Would anyone who is self-conscious of their singing abilities want to enter the Music business if they know they are dreadful at music? You can dream to be in it, but you wouldn't want the nation to know. Besides this, after the performance, he tells the judges that he has had no pervious training in singing. This, to me, indicates that he thinks he is a great singer already, and with a wee bit more training, he could strike it big. The most obvious clue that demonstrates his self-vision of himself is that immediately after Simon tells him his opinion, William's face shows great disappointment. If you already know that you sing terribly, that comment wouldn't come at such a surprise. After this, he delivers his speech.
I would have said that I tried my best and that I thank the judges for their time as well. It's called "your manners", "politeness" and "courtesy".
People like to feel superior to others. One of the ways to achieve this is to find inferior people and look down on them. William Hung is perfect. With his numerous "qualities", it is enough to make anybody feel good about themselves.
I have only watched one time of his "She Bangs" with his "unbelievable" dance. But, it is enough to last me a lifetime. I have seen all that I need to see - the truth about William Hung.
