I went to see the Terracotta Warriors on Tuesday at The Centre. It was SO good!!! I swear, if there was any good performance I have seen in my life, this is the one.
It's an Action-Musical, meaning that it's a show with lots of action and there is music! D'uh! Anyway, the music was live. Someone was playing the pipa ~I think it's called "pipa", but I would have said "pei pa". Anyhow, another was playing the drums. They were really good. The show was in the form of a dance preformance. The dancers articulated the dance so well. They are super flexible, too.
The story is about the first emperor of China. He is usually perceived as a tyrant in Chinese history, but in this interpretation, he is just like a real person. The backdrops, the costomes, the props were all wonderful. The backdrops looked so real; the costomes were very beautiful, especially the women's clothing!
Then, there were the fighting scenes, excellent as well. In a couple of scenes, some people did some acrobatics and played some Chinese traditional... tricks... er... I don't know how to say it. Nicely done. They rightly deserve the applause. Two really cute kids performed as well. Wow, they sure can flex their bodies. Besides fighting and acrobatic scenes, they also had a couple of sex scenes. Er... no... not actually sex scenes, just "dance of sex".
The romance plot was kind of cheesy though. The female lead is picked by the Emperor to be his Queen, but in her heart, she has another man. When this other man dies, she commits suicide. But I think the worst part of the story is the beginning, when they start the show by having 4 people fall into a cave and "dream" of the whole "history".
Overall, it was an awesome performance, too bad some stupid North American technology ruined it. The microphone was malfunctioning, so when the singer was singing, sometimes, suddenly, there was no sound. A great show about China, thwarted by North America...hmm...
